Viability Analysis
This section of the SWIFT Portal explores how small farms thrive.
Viability is rooted in feminist economics and challenges outdated definitions of farm success by valuing the invisible labour that keeps rural life going: caregiving, community-building, and everyday resilience. Through deep fieldwork with Women-Led Initiatives (WLIs) in Spain, we’re co-developing a feminist self-diagnosis tool: a hands-on guide that helps small farms assess their own viability on their own terms. The tool includes indicators for both the productive and reproductive dimensions of farm life—what’s grown in the field and what sustains life at home. You’ll also find practical user guidelines, real-world research insights, and a policy brief aiming to shift how institutions understand and support small-scale, gender-just farming. Dig in to explore the future of truly sustainable agriculture.
